"Random takeaways from a week in Paris (for anyone who might be visiting in the future)" |
|
- Beautiful, cool, visually appealing city; - Early October is a great time to go....weather couldn't have been nicer...blue skies and temps in the 60s/low 70s; - Lots of English spoken everywhere; - People nicer than we have heard...you typically get what you give; - Newsflash to Parisians of ALL ages: SMOKING IS REALLY BAD FOR YOU! OMG it was everywhere. - Wine doesn't seem to make one tired there, even with lunch. No idea why that is, but I drank a glass or two almost every day at lunch and didn't have that need a nap feeling; - Traffic is really bad; - Ubers are abundant and easy; - Invest in "skip the line" tickets WHEREVER" they are available. Lines for museums and attactions are absurdly long without them; - From a general standpoint, food was the biggest disappointment for me. I know Paris is known for it's food, but we had mixed reviews and experiences. Cafe's are abundant, and the rule of thumb is to pick one that lots of people, but we found most of the food in the cafe's was just so so....not a healthy food freak, but they don't seem to offer any "clean" simple food for the most part. If you are a picky eater (like my wife), you're pretty much out of luck in most restaurants and especially in the nicer ones. They don't do simple, they don't do healthy, and they don't do customized very well. Even salads. Lots of stuff in them, and you take it the way they make it. You can get burgers and pizzas at most places, so that's good. - This is the weirdest thing and some might not believe me, but it is nearly impossible to get a basic vodka martini in Paris. https://jeparleamericain.com/2012/02/05/ill-have-a-martini-sil-vous-plait/ if you don't believe me. That's my go to drink before dinner when we are out...and they simply don't make them. The first couple of nights I got some variations. I googled it and found it was an issue and we even found a place near our hotel that was mentioned as a place to get one. We went there and I asked the bartender if he knew how to make a vodka maritini...just pour vodka in a shaker with ice and pour it into a glass sil vous plat. He returned with a shot glass with chilled vodka in it. I gave up. - We went to the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, Versaille, did a river cruise, had lunch at the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, toured Claude Monet's house, had lunch on the Champs Elysees, and did a second river cruise...this time for dinner; - Took a tour of a couple of castles in the Chambord area...pretty cool day; - One of the highlights was a couple of lunch visits we made to the village of Montmartre. A really cool area in the highest point of Paris with a square full of street artists and cafe's. Great place to sit outside of a cafe and watch people pass by. We went back a second day in a row. That's all I got for now. Thanks again to those who gave suggestions a couple of months back!
