Seeing how vast America is from the window of a train definitely gives you a viewpoint you can't, in many cases, get anywhere else. The New River Gorge in WV is amazing, as are the Sierra Nevadas and some of the canyons in the Rockies. I loved being able to get up and walk around whenever I wanted, and meals were included with the price of a roomette. Otherwise, the meals were outrageously overpriced. Bonus : they actually know how to make grits. Had breakfast one day with a couple from Ireland who had never heard of grits. The roomette is ideal for daytime travel, but the "bed" the seats fold into is about the width of a library shelf. Track conditions determined if I was able to sleep at all. Ridership definitely skews older, but there were a few kids on some of the legs. Amish, too. Sorry, Jamester, but I found the Empire Builder pretty boring, at least westbound. California Zephyr was the best scenery, but was so late due to a derailment and having to wait behind freight trains that they put 9 of us off at Galesburg, IL and crammed us into a van for a 4 hour drive to Indy to meet the train we were supposed to catch in CHI. At least I was able to sleep for a few hours on that one. Amtrak was generally on time, except for the last day of the Zephyr. Some really, really great scenery interspersed with hours of boring midwest corn fields and cows. Glad I did it once, but once is enough. |
