"Meh, I think 100% of us are racists to some extent or another...." |
|
Message Replied To ========== we need to just face facts - about 35% of our population (probably more) are flat-out racists. they come in all shapes and sizes, and from all walks of life, and some are quite clever in their camouflage. We have all had those experiences where you ar getting to know somebody socially or through business, and at some point they think you might be part of "the club" b/c you aren't black or brown, and they let some little thought or opinion or pet name slip b/c they either think you agree or maybe they've had one too many alco beverages or maybe a little of both. I have been in this situation at least a half a dozen times over the last 5 years, and it is really awkward. BBG ==============================And most of our racist feeling are so ingrained that we don't even realize them. I grew up in a majority black area and love many things about African-American culture. I firmly believe that the black race has gotten a bad deal overall in America and still faces many consequences and challenges that need to be rectified as a result. I truly believe in Martin Luther King's dream to my very core.
Yet I still catch myself making assumptions about people based on race, or laughing at jokes based on racial stereotypes. And that isn't unique to me as a white man. Heck some of the cruelest real racism you see is African-Americans on blacks of different culture or skin tone, Asians on other Asians, Latinos on other Latinos.
Yet most people will think this way without ever examining their conscience and seeing it for the racism it is. Some people are much worse than others. Most rednecks will swear they aren't racists. They just never quite get it how racist much of the buffoonery that is who they are is. It's sad and pathetic but more ignorant than the truly malevolent type of racism.
The optimist in me has to believe that the truly malevolent racist types are less than 5% of America. And their numbers are diminishing everyday as the world get more open and knowledgable.
