"My boys love football especially watching Gator football"

Message Replied To ==========

I have two sons in college and they don’t care about team sports all. *

Here are a few issues though:

You can never get a better seat than in front of a big screen TV. So the question is not "what is wrong with this generation"? It is, "why do we go to football games"?

The answer is simple: the game day experience.

People go to games to hang out and party with old friends. THAT is the game day experience television can not get you. How does UF overcome that?

Well, it is not just UF, it needs to be the entire city of Gainesville.

Many are not going to like my approach but it would help:

1) create a party atmosphere by closing off almost all of that part of University Avenue that runs by campus. Make that an open container allowed zone and allow bars/food trucks access there. Close it off all day on gameday

2) stop badgering the Greek system. There have been so many restrictions on fraternities and sororities that they are unable to have big pregame barbecues for family and alumni..they are certainly nervous about serving beer openly. Like it or not, the Greek system is a backbone of a strong alumni and later, donation base.

3) Improve wifi and cell service in the stadium,then couple that with an app that gives an "augmented reality" aspect to the game...with up to date stats readily available in real time

4) The city of Gainesville needs to host festivals the Friday nights before games. Most small towns hold "Downtown Friday Nights" with bands playing/vendors selling beer/wine/food.plan those for Friday game days so out of town fans can enjoy them. Gainesville tends to holds these things on away game or bye weekends.

5) try to encourage the hotels to stop gouging people with those two night minimums/ high prices on game days. The hotels are not all selling out. Supply and demand would suggest prices should be going down now.

6) speaking of supply and demand, the same should be true of game tickets and price

7) we should never play more than two OOC cupcakes. That third OOC game needs to be home and away against another Power 5 team..even if that means 1 less home game every other year.

8)the lack of legacies DOES hurt. Going to Gator games used to be a family affair..but when Junior doesn't get accepted and ends up at UCF instead..guess where the family starts going? A very good friend of mine, Gator alumni etc now wears Garnett and Gold on Saturdays because that is where his son was accepted. I would not have a problem with no legacies if ALL admissions were based on merit..but they are not. So if we are going to admit based on other criteria, then some should be legacy based as well.

9) Despite poor attendance, student tickets DO sell out. One of my sons fails to get tickets every year. Allow block tickets to be easier for various organizations to encourage students to go with big groups of friends ...once again, enhancing that game day experience.
