" Good luck. Last January, for the first time in my life, my doctor told me " |

Message Replied To ========== Starting week 3 of sugar detox Not a fad... trying to eat veggies, lean protein and nuts. Cravings have been insane but are starting to wane. I really want to see the impact on my cholesterol. I have a baseline from End of October with a new draw on 7-Jan. Really interested to see what this new way of eating will do. ==============================that I was pre-diabetic (borderline). I decided to do something. After a bit of education, I embarked on a rather simple (but not necessarily easy) plan of diet & exercise. I also kept a diary for the first several months tracking what I ate, exercise, and several daily readings of my blood sugar, blood pressure, and weight. In February, I began walking .... 2 miles to 8 miles a day, 4-6 days a week. I gave up certain foods, primarily carbohydrates, raw/added sugars, and most processed foods, essentially embarking on a keto diet. No bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, sweet tea, cookies, ice cream, etc. It was strict for the first 4 months, since then I will OCCASIONALLY sample a couple of these items in moderation. I mainly eat certain vegetables, lots of salads (with oil & vinegar dressing), eggs, cheese, tons of protein (chicken, fish, pork, turkey, and occasional red meat), nuts, and low-carb tortilla wraps in lieu of bread. I drink lots of water, black coffee, unsweet iced tea, and red wine. I turned 63 in October and the results have been good. I have dropped 40 pounds and am staying around 195 (I'm easily 6' tall). I have also had hypertension for almost 25 years and had been placed on a second medication last year. I'm now completely off the HCTZ and have cut the dosage of my (Lisinopril) in half. Genetics are an uncontrollable factor. However, even modest changes to diet & exercise can have a profound effect on our bodies, and our lives.
