Service Dress Whites under cap n gown. Proceed from the Con Dome to the Union, still a midshipman. Cast off the gown, have some lunch. Hear some speeches. Tell some inside jokes. Proceed to the dais, in order of class rank. Raise right hand, take the solemn oath, receive orders.

I was #8 in a commissioning class of 8. As other ensigns’/2LTs’ orders were read, usually to flight school or nuke power school, all to polite applause. But when my orders were read to Pearl Harbor for assignment as Port Operations Officer on the Pacific Fleet staff, there were loud cheers.

Go Gators.
