(EDITED BY AUTHOR: 12/8/2003 - 5:08 a.m.) the 6 blown calls simply had a MAJOR IMPACT in the outcome of the game and nobody with any remote sense of logic can deny that. The fact remains that just after THREE...I MEAN THREE, AS IN HALF THE CALLS WE'RE TALKING ABOUT fsu scored touchdowns plays later that never would have happened had the right calls been made.
To wit:
1) fsu's first touchdown.
Guss Scott hits fsu's Chris Davis after he CLEARLY catches a pass, lands, takes one step and fumbles. Call is incomplete. Two plays later, an fsu o lineman moves early, no call, fsu scores on the same play. SEVEN POINTS FOR fsu.
2) fsu's Patrick Watkins' "fumble return" of Caitrick Faison's "non fumble". THE GUY WAS ON HIS FREAKING BACK ON THE GROUND BEFORE THE BALL CAME OUT!
No way in hell can contest anyone that! FOURTEEN POINTS FOR fsu.
3) Leon Washington's fumble at the UF 2 yard line. Channing Crowder recovered the fumble, plain and simple. The refs explaination to Coach Zook was thus: "Coach, the runner DID fumble but recovered his own fumble with his knee." THAT my friend is a direct quote. Since when does one's knee on the ball constitute possession? Try never! fsu scores 4 plays later on 4th down sneak by Rix. TWENTY-ONE POINTS BY FOR fsu.
This is to say nothing of the following:
1) Opening kickoff. A clear fumble at fsu's 25 yard line which most likely would have resulted in a FG for UF.
2) Kickoff on the next UF kickoff where we were ruled offsides and had scored on. Looked like we may had a player with his toe on the white. Damn chintzy but hell I'll give you that one.
3) Chris Davis fumbled on a reverse in the 1st quarter. No call, down.
4) Lorenzo Booker fumbled in the first quarter. No call, down.
5) Late in the third quarter, UF's Keiwan Ratliff picked Rix WITH ONE FOOT ON BOUNDS in the back corner of the north endzone. Ref doesn't even think about it. Calls him out immediately. Look at the replay. He has a foot in.
All of the foregoing information does not say "fsu cheated". It simply says they were the beneficiary of PROBABLY COLLEGE FOOTBALL'S WORST OFFICIATED GAME IN THE LAST 25 YEARS! Even if UF had pulled out the win, all of these pathetic calls wouldn't just go away. IF this crew ever gets any games again, it shouldn't be until 2005. They should be suspended for the entire 2004 season. Their utter incompetence puts a horrible stain on what was otherwise a very entertaining game to the viewer. Such blatant incompetence shouldn't be sluffed off like it has been. NONE of us in our jobs could ever do such a pathetic job without being called to task.
