When you talk about Spurrier's great college record I think you can divide it into two distinct phases; the first one ended with the MNC in January 1997 and the second with his resignation in January 2002.
The first one was an unqualified success, a 73-14-1 record, 5 SEC championships plus a first place SEC finish in 1990, and 1 MNC and a Heisman trophy winner.
The second phase is a little more difficult. From 1997 to 2002, UF won the SEC only once. UF never won more than 10 games in any season. Spurrier seemed to grow obsessive about his QBs and his passing game. So much so that UFs running game and its defense became growing concerns (especially after Bobby Stoops left for Oklahoma). UF lost other coaches also and their replacements were lets say a mixed bag. UF also lost players early to the NFL- probably more than any other team. Spurrier shrugged. There were constant NFL wispers and slips in recruiting. After a banner haul in 1999 the recruiting classes of 2000 and 2001 were less than what was expected. Spurrier's teams played undisciplined making penalties and turnovers, how many games did UF lose because they played stupid football? Spurrier played golf. He squabbled with Foley, he squabbled with the SEC brass, he took potshots at other coachs, the FSU game became more known for thuggery than big plays. It wasn't always pretty. But he was a Gator and we loved him. And he still won alot- 49 games in 5 years which is not to shabby but he came up short in most of the real big games in his second phase- games he won during the first 7 years. But was the old ball coach's drive already gone? Was he dreaming of the NFL? Who knows. Spurrier left UF, he always said he would, for a shot at the NFL and $5 million. By most accounts his resignation caught the AD off guard. A cross country oddesey to find a replacement was begun. Another recruiting class sufferred. A rookie coach and a questionable roster of talent team led to 8-5 in 2002.
UF has a big game tomorrow. A game that will tell alot about the future of UF. 9-4 while playing one of the nation's toughest schedules and with such a young team will be making a statement. Ron Zook can cement his place as HBC. Another 8-5 and the Spurrier returns talk will continue.
I am greatful for everything that Spurrier brought to UF football. Now I hope he realizes that his first act will be hard to follow. Its time to move on...turn the page.
