I don't honestly think that SOS would have stayed at UF much longer EVEN IF Foley had publicly defended SOS and berated Dockett to your satisfaction. The FHBC was consistent in saying he wanted to give the NFL a try, and that he didn't want to coach into his 60's. It was time for that try.
Foley is the convenient scapegoat whenever anything controversial occurs involving UF sports teams -- whether scholarship or "club" teams -- or coaches. He is accused of being arrogant, cowing under in private negotiations (like we would ever KNOW what happens in PRIVATE discussions), not "standing up to" the bully du jour, etc. Part of his job is to absorb such criticism, and he does that pretty well, I think.
More significant, to me, is that despite all the criticisms repeated, ad mauseum, on this and other message boards, no one can claim that Jeremy Foley does not CARE ABOUT EACH AND EVERY SPORT, COACH, AND ATHLETE that represents UF. When I lived in Tallahassee, I routinely saw him at UF-FSU women's basketball games, soccer and tennis matches, volleyball games, men's baseball games, and he would just be sitting in the cheesy Tully gym bleachers with the rest of the Gators, watching the match and cheering for our team. I also had an opportunity to speak with him at a softball game the first weekend that the new stadium was opened, and his delight at the quality of the facility, and the support the team was getting, were palpable.
Football may be the money-making machine that drives the UF Athletic Department, but it is not the only sport at UF. The main reason UF is in the top 10 in ALL sports every year is that our athletic director is focused on the entire athletic program. I think the man is doing a fine job for us, and although I respect your right to criticize Foley, I often wish everyone would cut him a little slack and look at the big picture -- which not only encompasses all the sports at UF but looks farther down the road than next year.
Just my two cents.
