"Yesterday was not a great one for the Gator Nation"

IMO, regardless of the criticism the coach or team may have earned, it was the fans that looked the worst. I'm a pretty loyal guy, but a certain amount of my claim to being a long-time Gator is that I'm just getting old. A 30 year old Gator really hasn't had the opportunity to experience the feeling that eight wins is a GREAT season- or that, hey, five losses wasn't so bad this year. No one has spoiled Gators more than Steve Spurrier, first with the wonderful three years he played, then with the incredible 12 years he coached. The thing that's more important is not having lived through bad or even just mediocre seasons, it's how we react to those seasons. It's only recent history that has made 8-5 seem so awful. Iowa fans, for example, has feelings now that compare to the way the Gators fans felt in '91. Before Spurrier, there probably were reasonable comparisons between the football history at Iowa and at Florida. The bad side of the Spurrier years was that the Gators attracted so many people like the guys who sat in front of me yesterday. The bad part of success is a winning team attracts people who don't add to my fun. The good side was that they left early enough that I didn't have to listen to them as I kept my loving smile for the Gators until the end. It still is a good thing to be a Gator, in fact it's great.
