"Re: Question: what's the max weight you'd suspend"

To give new meaning on how many people does it take to screw in a light bulb, here is my method...

Since you can't get above the room, take 2 x 4 runners around the perimeter of your living room and use hardened nails to hammer them into your foundation....then take 2 x 4 studs and cut them 14" below your current ceiling hgt......run these studs around the perimeter of your room.  Frame around doors, windows and openings.  Put (2) 2 x 4 stringers above studs...Take 2 x 8 joists and run them across the shortest distance across the room....pull all your old outlets and phone jacks and mount flush with new 2 x 4s and new sheetrock....hang sheetrock outside your new studs and under your new rafters (after putting in your new light box and support, mud your new sheetrock, paint it and blow your new ceiling (cover carpet).  The room will be quite a bit smaller and much lower....but its the simple way to hang a new fixture.
