"Zook at the Pi Kappa Phi House--first hand know-"

ledge.NOTE: POST WAS LINKED FROM THE FRONT PAGE OF FARK.COM AND RECEIVED OVER 33,000 VIEWS BEFORE SCROLLING OFF THE BOARD.I live in Gainesville. I employ several U of F students. One of them is a member of the Pi Kappa Phi house. He was present for the entire incident. The incident was precipitated the prior night by the fight we've read about in the paper. Apparently, Pi Kap had a social event in downtown Gainesville that evening. Near the end of the evening, someone shot-a-bird at someone else. The someones were members of the fraternity and the football players mentioned in the newspaper story. The football players got in their car and followed a car with three members of the fraternity back to their house. The fraternity members parked their car and the football players parked theirs in such a way as to prevent the fraternity members from leaving. Then they positioned themselves between the fraternity house and the members car.Initially, the fight was very one-sided with the favor all in the direction of the football players. Then other members of the fraternity started to arrive at the house from the social event downtown. At the same time, as the noise level rose, members of the fraternity started to come out of the house. The momentum of the fight started to swing. Then other football players started to arrive. My employee estimates a total of a dozen arrived in addition to the first three.Channing Crowder was one of the first to arrive. The brawl was occurring near the kitchen door of the fraternity house. He entered the house through the kitchen door shouting challenges to fraternity members that if they wanted to fight that they could fight him.My employee did not attend the social and was in the house. Being the individual he is he, along with another 3 or 4 fraternity members, started to try to get all the fraternity members into the house.Somewhere during the altercation, UPD arrived on scene. As the situation was coming under controll all the football players were ushered out of the house and the members were ordered inside. One UPD officer stayed inside while the rest of the officers were outside with the football players. According to my employee, the police did not ask for nor did they permit the fraternity members to give statements. The officer did inform him that if the players came to the house again that the members should immediately call the police. The next day my employee was at the house. He looked out the window and noticed there were 3 or 4 football players milling around outside the house. Over the course of the next several minutes more football players started to arrive. Within a short period of time there was an estimated 10-15 football players outside the fraternity. Then a member noticed an older man in an orange shirt. They recognized him as Ron Zook.At this point, the fraternity members eagerly went outside to greet Coach Zook. They were becoming quite scared before seeing the Coach. Upon seeing him, they believed he was coming to discuss the situation with them. My employee and 2 or 3 other members were addressed by Coach Zook. My employees and his fraternity brothers were quickly disabused by Coach Zook as to his intentions. He immediately accused them of picking on "his" players. My employee described Zook's actions, body language and tone of voice as being aggressive. He lectured them about the baseball player who was sucker punched outside Balls and died from it. Their response was no one from the house sucker punched anyone and that the players followed them to their house. Zook's response to this was he knew his playrs pretty good and he knows they wouldn't do something like that. At some time during Ron Zook's--I'm not sure what to call it in all honesty--he began to use profanity. The vice president of the fraternity was in the house and made aware of what was occurring outside. He left the house to engage Coach Zook. The verbatim quote of Coach Zook when approached by the vice president was, "Who the f--k are you?" While this event was developing my employee called UPD on his phone. They arrived near the time when the vice president of the fraternity left the house to speak to Ron Zook. The officers approached Coach Zook and ignored the fraternity members. There was a discussion between Zook and the officers. The officer then addressed the fraternity members by saying, "Now what kind of trouble have you gotten yourselves into?" The vice president and my employee attempted to explain the football players and Ron Zook came to the house without being provoked by the fraternity members. The police officers would not listen.Fortunately for the fraternity members, the Dean of Greek Affairs was in the fraternity house next door and came outside when someone made him aware of the situation. The attitude of the police officers took a 180 degree turn. The Dean began to address the situation and Coach Zook as well. The police than at the direction of the Dean began to disperse the football players. Ron Zook apparently was not satisifed with this development because at some point while he was at the fraternity house--I'm not clear if this was before or after the Dean's arrival--he told several of the fraternity members that "they would get theirs" and this "wasn't over."I will not under any circumstances whatsoever reveal the identity of this individual. He, and his fellows, are still nervous about the situation. That they are is quite understandable, in my humble opinion. I have directed him to contact me if any other players or any person makes contact with him or any of his fraternity brothers about this situation. My reason for posting this is the strong interest so many have about this and the reflection it has on the University of Florida
