"State of My Gator Union Address (I Have to Let Go)"

Gator Grad, Class of 92. I have to say a couple of things....even if nobody reads....just to get it off my chest... 1. I have never been an alum that has wanted Spurrier back. Most of us knew his time was short and that he wanted to do other things, and in my mind when he left, that was it. End of the era, forever. I have never wanted us to be a group of fans who were like Alabama fans, always trying to recreate Bear Bryant. It's sad, really. 2. Zook was a perfect short term hire, for the benefit of the talent he brought in. I am not a savvy enough Gator fan to know the for sure, but it seemed like when the Gators had it going the best, in the mid 90's, it was Spurrier coaching the talent that Zook had helped bring in. I have been very excited about the talent, especially in light of the last couple of uninspired recruiting years of Spurrier's era. I think Zook has done an "A" job at bringing in the players. In doing so, I had really been hoping that his coaching would improve, trying to give him as much time as needed to grow with the outstanding talent he had brought in. 3. I was really ready to endure another 4-5 loss season and give him one more year with his guys, partly because I thought that would be fair, and partly because I thought it would show a lot of class on the University's part to give the guy a full four years of recruiting and coaching. One thing I cannot stomach, however, is repeating the same mistakes, over and over again. It seems as if that's what's happening with our school, losing the same way, with the same mistakes, over and over again. You don't have to win by 20 every week in my mind, but you should hold more leads than you lose, and you should beat the teams you're syupposed to, and that certainly includes MSU on Saturday. 4. You can tell good coaching immediately, and watching MSU play aggressive, throwing blockers away, getting after every play, I saw what the Gators are not under Zook. The players may like Zook, but there are few times you can say they left it all on the field the way MSU did. And it's my understanding that MSU has played that way all year, not just getting up for a big game. They may have lost, but Croom has them playing hard. Maybe it's earier to do that with guys who aren't blue chip players, but the attitude and execution is obvious. And that wouldn't have changed if UF had gone down the field and scored to win instead off turning the ball over and then just plain turning over. 5. Lastly, I don't think it's fair that every single one of our losses is front page news across the country, and I can't remember the last time one of our wins was celebrated in the same manner. I don't think it's right that most of us that have kept an even frame of mind about Zook should be told that we are wrong for thinking a change needs to be made. I have heard Pat Dooley time and time again chide all of us for being to quick to anger, not seeing a bigger picture, but I think that not even the coach loving Dooley can ignore what's happening with the football team. 6. I think we Gator fans are the best in the country, new and old, been there through all the tough times and those who came on board with Steve Spurrier. Gator alums across the nation feel the sting of this indignity tonight, but I'll be pleased when we can share in victory again. 7. I hope that again means next Saturday. There would be no greater elixir for this Saturday than a win next week. That's one thing in which I know every Gator fan is united. end of rambling
