.. how long he wants to stay, how much money he wants, or anything else. It's GOT to be Spurrier.
Because your insightful reasoning on Machen's ability won't make any difference to the lynch mob. Even if Spurrier comes out and says he doesn't want the job, the lynch mob won't accept it, and outside posers will fan the flames. They'll convince people that Spurrier really DID want the job, but knew he wouldn't get it, so he declined. And heaven help any OTHER coach if Spurrier ever makes it public that he WANTED the job but was turned down.
If any coach other than Spurrier (or maybe Stoops) is named, he is doomed (and most coaches will realize that, as the word spreads about the Gator lust for a Spurrier return). Some Gator-hater poser would launch a "firexxxxxxx.com" site, and the Gator lynch-mob and non-Gator posers will start lining up like lemmings to try to destroy his program from day one. And they will succeed... again.
Machen and Foley need to see that hiring SOS is a no-lose situation, and hiring anyone else is a no-win situation. Not with the "fans" that we have.
There are 3 different outcomes to hiring Spurrier, and ALL are better than hiring someone who is doomed from the start:
1) Spurrier comes in and stays for a decade, picking up where he left off in 1996, winning championships and terrorizing the SEC. He stays for a decade or however long he wants, and in the process grooms his replacement. When he finally leaves, there is a smooth transition and hopefully continuing success.
2) Spurrier comes in and stays however long he wants, picking up where he left off, winning championships. However, he AGAIN leaves in a snit over some dispute with management, leaving the program in a lurch. The AD has to scramble again to find a coach to replace the legend. We are in the same spot again, but we've had the chance to enjoy the Fun-N-Gun for awhile longer. With any luck, maybe our fans will give the following coach a chance. If not, we're really no worse off than we are now, and we've addeded a few championships.
3) Spurrier comes back and fails miserably, for whatever reasons. Games are being lost, his recruiting starts to tank, the lynch mob that whined for him to come back starts the call for his head. He is fired in disgrace, which hurts all real Gators to the core, but the "Bear Bryant" curse is finally lifted from the Florida program, and a new head coach can come in and develop his team without the spectre of "Bring Back the Spur" hanging over his head. It would suck to watch that happen to SOS, but at least then maybe the program could move on above the program-destroying hyenas we have that would doom any other coach right now.
It MUST be Spurrier.
Well, that's all. I still can't keep my temper on this site when it comes to my "Gator brethren" bashers, so I'll slide on back into the swamp and be quiet.
