"Some of you aren't going to like this one bit..."

....but why would THAT stop me?! I propose you guys lay off UF President Bernie Machen! I realize that this is a sports message board and all many here care about is Gator football, but like it or not, there is much more to the University of Florida than Gator football. As someone who has been either a student or employee of UF under six different presidents, I can say with some authority that, given a chance, Bernie Machen will prove to be far and away the best of them--he already has proven to be better than a few--and he will do more to help UF than the rest of them combined. Machen's concern is the entire University of Florida, and I'm sure that he recognizes that Gator football is a very important part of UF. Some here are ready to fire Bernie Machen because Steve Spurrier doesn't want to come back here?!? If you care about the University of Florida, and not just about Gator football, then settle down. If you don't care about UF, and all you care about is Gator football, then you can kiss my !!! The most popular-with-the-masses recent UF president, John Lombardi, had the whole Gator Booster/football-schmoozing thing down pat. He also did some serious damage to UF as a whole and left office under less-than-favorable circumstances. You guys have spoken about Bernie Machen as if he has a humongous ego. Nothing could be further from the truth. Sure, he has to have some self-confidence to have gotten the job in the first place, but the man is NOT an egomaniac. He is extremely personable and, at least so far, an exceptionally effective leader. Lombardi, on the other hand, was one of the biggest egomaniacs and one of the least sincere people you could ever encounter. He was also quite dictatorial in his leadership style. He forced through "reforms" that we are still recovering from. Since many here can apparently read minds and know what SOS is really thinking, and since everyone has a "reliable" source, and since the word of the Original Anti-Gator, Mike Bianchi, has suddenly gained a lot of credibility around here, I know many will reject this idea, but maybe, just maybe, Bernie Machen will help us get a really great football coach for the Gators. Spurrier has spurned us (again). Stoops has said he's not interested (again). I know it sounds really boring, but why don't we just wait and see what happens and support whoever our new coach is, instead of bitching and moaning all day long? Besides, aren't we a basketball school now?! Go Gators!!!
