"This SHOULD BE the headline in the Knoxville News-Sentinel if they had any hair on their arse"
This was my brother's quote tonite, I wish I could claim it, but it's his. I think in many ways this sums things up from tonite.
First off the main guys in a long list of Florida folks that deserve a TON of credit. Some obvious some not so much, perhaps. (In order)
1. The Florida fans that made the trip. Wow. This was my 5th UF-UT game in Neyland that I've attended (was in Gainesville in '94 and sick in '00). I have always been impressed with how well the Florida fans traveled. This was not so much the case tonite (not a slur, these fans are the group I am the most "proud" of) Usually the Gator section is huge and SOLID blue. This year it was clearly not as large and there were some pockets of Orange. I don't know if the UF ticket allotment changed this year, but it did not seem like nearly as big a Florida crowd as usual. My brother and I both noticed it before the game started. But I'll tell you right now, that bunch believed. That group of fans that made the trip are a true credit to the Gators. They were vocal and classy. The team recognized them at the end and gave them an ovation. The Gator fans that sold their tickets, didn't deserve to be a part of this great Gator victory. It was an unusually easy thing to do to congratulate all the Gator fans I saw as I left the stadium.
2. Zook. I read a line in the Knoxville paper today that said, "If it's wrong to be positive Zook doesn't want to be right." Nuff said. Great mental preparation by him for this game. Great game plan by his offensive coordinator.
3. R. Grossman. If you give that guy any time, he'll shred you. I said it a few weeks ago and started doubting it after the Ohio game. Silly me. That guy is super. Clearly the best college football player in America. You all are righty proud. When he had time, he threw lasers down the field. When he didn't have time he created plays. One of the greatest performances I've seen.
4. E. Graham. He came into this game with something to prove and I think he did. I thought this was one area Florida was clearly better than Tennessee before the game and I think it was very apparent. He didn't have a lot of holes to work with and still ran really well. Broke so many tackles I thought I was watching Travis Henry.
5. Lee Croso. Yes, I'm giving that clown credit, part of the whole bad karma of the day. I was worried when he put that Smokey head on this morning.
Things that will be talked about, probably for years, that (in the final analysis) didn't really matter.
1. The rain. It was miserable, no doubt. The Gators took to it like, well Gators. The bullet that Grossman threw for the second TD was in the middle of the storm. Wow. No excuse for Tennessee not being able to handle the thing.
2. The call. First off, let's be clear, of all the horrible calls I've seen in the Florida-Tennessee series, that one has to be the worst. NOT EVEN CLOSE. Was it a back breaker? Yes, sort of. I say that you make your own breaks. The bottom line IMO is that Jacobs should have scored on his long pass to set up the first and goal at the one. More importantly, UT never should have let him 6 yards behind the safety. If we would just cover the guy, the play never happens. That catch is the back breaker.
3. Washington. Clearly was still a bit gimpy. I thought he played a great game, though some might argue. Drew a lot of double coverage, we just couldn't get a second wide out involved. He would have run for more yards on the catches he did have, but Clausen could not seem to hit him in stride.
I said before the game that the only way I thought Florida would win was if turnovers were huge (check), if the Tennessee O line couldn't dominate (I thought they would break out and take a close game in the first half and control it in the 4th quarter-WRONG), if UT couldn't pressure Grossman (I don't think they got nearly enough pressure on him. A lot of the sacks/pressures were because of coverage and when they did get pressure Grossman created yards). What I didn't expect to see was the Gator special teams beat Tennessee's. I also didn't expect to see the Vols out coached.
Bottom line. Really a great year defining win for the Gators. I have nothing negative to say about the Gators tonite.
