"The University of Florida as a center of academic "

excellence. there was a long thread below about the direction the University takes in regards to its admission policy. I realize that I am re-opening a well discussed subject, but I feel strongly enough to do so. The state of Florida contiues to grow at a rapid pace and will soon be one of the largest states in the union. I believe that a state of this size needs to have at least one of the premier state universities in the country, a center of academic excellence. The exceptionally bright and motivated students of this state deserve to have a in-state university of this caliber. I cannot believe that any real Gator would want any university other than Florida to play this role. Just as I want my university to be number one in every sport and activity that we particpate in, I also want us to be number one in academic standings. I do not like to be second best in any thing. If this means my grandchildren will be denied admission, then so be it. I would rather this to occur than have to accept the fact that FSU or Florida Atlantic was that premier univerity. It would be much easier for me to say my grandchild was denied admission to UF than to say she selected UF because she was denied admission to FSU. For the record, I had a daughter accepted to UF who made not have made it except for my legacy. Her best friend with almost identical academic records and test scores was denied. Her father was a multi-millionaire who was prepared to contribute a lot of dollars. But it did not sway the admissions folks. I tried my best to dissuade my daughter from attending due to the fact that she was not highly academically motivated. But she insisted because of her love for UF. She quickly ran into academic problems. She transferred to Auburn university at Montgomery and graduated with very respectable grades and is doeing well in her chosen field. She continues to be a fanatical Gator fan who comes to as many games as she can manage.
