1) The re-emergence of Rex Grossman can't be overstated.
Now, i am a firm believer that the team that runs the best and defends the run the best has the best chance of winning the most games - and championships - but let's face it - this team was/is only going to go as far as Rex takes it. Plain and simple.
Through the first three games, almost throughOUT those games, it seemed as if #8 had been kidnapped and replaced with an erratic, overthrowing, indecisive imitation. Even through the 1st quarter against UT, when Rex was 4 for 13, i honestly was having my doubts and wondering just when everything was going to click in and be like it was before, if ever.
And then the real Rex showed up.
His flawless wet-shotgun handles, his amazing elusive and gutty scrambling, his ballsy attempts at threading needles to capable receivers, and of course that deadeye accuracy to which we'd all become accustomed.....just as quickly as it seemed they'd disappeared, were all back.
And with them, the Gators hopes.
With the Real Rex playing, we are never out of any game.
With the Real Rex, we feel (both fans and players - it's important!) like we can score from anywhere on the field.
With real Rex in there, our D doesn't have to feel like it has to totally shut someone down, because we'll know we can put points up.
With the real Rex Grossman in there, slinging bullets and scrambling with amazing elusiveness and toughness, and driving HIS team towards the goal, the Gators do indeed have that swagger back. At this level, that is invaluable, and can't be replaced.
The fact that he shook off the early troubles right in the middle of a huge game, and then returned to his previous outstanding form and leadership are huge statements about his character and competitiveness, as well as his teachability and adaptability, and can't be overstated.
He has to be the single most valuable and BEST player in college football, and we are damn lucky to have him.
Rex, much how i said about the Gators as a whole, i'm not really sure if you ever truly went away, but it sure is good to have you back in full form. With Rex at the helm, all of this team's goals remain intact, and all things are possible.
And isn't that all any fan could ask for, really? We humans are all about HOPE, and just being able to enjoy that anticipation and hope, and soak up every last bit of fun and optimism that we can out of an all-too-short season just makes it all that much more fun and worthwhile.
2) I was thrilled to see several players' comments that they were PO'd and motivated by how the Vols' PA announcer kept referring to the HMFIC as "Zuke", and that they really wanted to go out there and show everyone who Zook is, and that they wanted to win this for their coach, not just themselves.
Most all here probly know that i am a card-carrying "Zooker" and that i've yet to be truly disappointed by a single public thing RZ has done with this team and program since he took over.
However, unlike Everglades and amsterdam and various others, i have no inside connections to the Gator locker room and program, and so i can't guarantee that there is 100% cooperation and trust between the players and their new coach.
And having seen Pete "Rah rah!" Carroll get run out of New England, i am very aware that certain personality types and methods just rub young players wrong, no matter how well intended they are.
So, while i personally never worried, and am not worried now, that there is any significant dissension or unhappiness within the Gator ranks, or that RZ has ever lost the trust and faith of his players, not being on the inside, i must admit that it occurred to me that such things were at least possible.
But this team-wide win, coupled with the players' comments in support of their coach and the obvious togetherness and toughness with which they took on and overcame a very tough obstacle on Saturday have reassured me 100% that there is no measurable mutinous force at work in our team's locker room - at least none big enough to get in the way of handling such a tough order as beating the #4 team in the country by 2+ touchdowns in their yard.
And having the players and the HMFIC and staff all on the same page and working together towards the same goals, it seems to me, is half the battle.
Not predicting a 13-1 season yet, but it seems as if our team grew up, and grew together on Saturday, and that indeed all things are possible.
It always was, and always will be, GREAT to be a Florida Gator!
