"Back from the Astrodome"

It is a surreal scene down there.  The Dome floor is packed and there are sick or injured all along the concourse areas.  I went in and "registered", which means I wrote my name down on a piece of paper and they drew a V on my hand.  There was really nobody organizing volunteers so they said just go find something to do, which I did.  I spent several hours setting up cots in the Reliant Center which will hold ~10,000 people   When I got there, there were about 100 cots set up, when I left the place was near capacity.  I probably set up about 200 myself, so I feel good knowing that 200 people will sleep tonight on cots that I put together. I went inside the Dome and it is hard to describe the scene.  Most of the people seemed to be fairly settled....showered, clean clothes, food, water.  I did see a busload of people arrive and it was horrifying.  I worked my way back outside and found a delivery truck that had just arrived with huge palletts of canned drinking water.  I jumped in with 5 other guys and we moved all of it up a ramp and into a staging area inside the dome.  The "walk-up" volunteers were the ones doing all the work from what I could see.  The groups that would come by wearing matching corporate shirts, fanny packs and ID badges around their necks...well...they didn't seem to want to be bothered with any real work - "sorry - we already have a task".  One of the guys helping us was an elderly black guy that was wearing one of the bracelets that all the refugees had.  We told him to go rest but he wasn't going to listen.

Keep the money coming. They are going to need it.
