Utah has so many issues this year, but the biggest one is no killer instinct. They have had double digit leads in the 2nd half of all 4 of their games. Yet, they only beat Arizona and AirForce by 3, and lose to TCU in overtime. It's enough to make me wanna puke.
And just a note to SG. When I read your posts, you seem to be comparing Meyers offense to any other option. Let me ask you this, how many times did Chris Leak run a traditional option against Tennesee? I can't remember Chris running an option once, but correct me if I'm wrong. He pitched the ball a couple times right off the snap (which went for good gains). But I can't remember him running to the sideline and pitching etc...
I agree with you when you say a "Nebraska" style offense wouldn't work in the SEC. Nebraska use to just bull people over with big corn fed farm boys. In the SEC (and agains teams like Southern Cal) the speed would negate the size, as the defensive player would already be in position to make a play before those Big O lineman could put a block on.
That is not this offense. This offense is all about having "real" options on every play. The option to run up the middle, go to the side, pass inside, pass down field etc...
It seemed like half the plays were hand offs out of the shotgun up the middle. That was a part of the offense I never liked at Utah, but I understood it's purpose (or at least what I think the purpose was). It was to keep the defense honest and maybe occasionally getting aome solid yards. But Leak seemed to settle for that play all night long, which made it easy to stop. And it was probably the least succesful part of the Utah offense, but it served it's purpose.
I think the offense will struggle this year, much like it did at Utah in the first year. If you look at some of the games in Utah, it was the defense that made play under Meyer.
And I have also heard people saying that Meyer's offense is not as exciting as Spurriers, and at this point I would agree. Once again, I would say it reminds me of Utah's first year. But in the 2nd year, when players were comfortable with the offense, Meyer started opening things up some. And I don't care what people say, Smith threw some bombs down field and there were several deep plays every game. If you don't believe go watch the Utah tapes from last year. Yes Utah would throw 5 yard passes, but Smith had a lot of 50 yard passes too. And there were also lot of "trick" plays on special teams. Like against UNLV, a pitch on the kick return that went for a touchdown etc...
I think this year Florida will be very successful, and I think next year they will be both succesful and the offense will be exciting to watch.
And it is funny to read the elitist SEC attitude, "that it couldn't possibly work in the SEC". When people say the SEC is the best conference in the land, I generally concur. But it is not so far removed from the other BCS conferences that saying that it worked against teams from the Pac-10, Big 12 etc... Is like saying it worked against a bunch of highschool kids. I think the bowls last year showed the parity in college football. Yes the SEC has fast and great teams, but the SEC has some stinker teams as well.
That offense blew out A&M, when Texas and Oklahoma couldn't. That offense put up a North Carolina school record on UNC, far more points than powerhouse Florida State and Miami (who actually lost) could put up. That offense won against CAL when USC couldn't in it's first championship year (two years ago) etc... And it did it with much less athletic players on whole than Florida has. No, these were not the best teams in the world, but they were all in the top half of their respective BCS conferences and they were decimated by it. So to say it wouldn't work in the SEC is a farce. Might it struggle against a tough SEC defense, yes it might. But so might every traditional offense in the world. Even a great offense (traditional or not) is at times going to struggle against a great defense. So when you say it might have a difficult time against a Georgia, Tenesee or other elite teams in the conference, of course it might.
Man that was just going to be a "note", I need to find a new hobby =)
