"Praise for the Gideons"

So, this morning as I was walking from the parking lot to work, I noticed that the Gideons are out all over campus today, giving away the little green pocket New Testaments. I always have the same thoughts when I see the Gideons, and I wanted to share them with you and get your opinions. Everyone wants to "save" college students, college campuses being a haven for all types of evil. We get all manner of street preachers around campus . . . and people handing out tracts about hellfire and brimstone, wanting to "speak with you for a moment," etc. Very invasive, very annoying . . . they do all the things that turn people off. I think even if I were a Christian they would piss me off. And then there are the Gideon reps. Nice older men wearing coats and ties, smiling, telling you good morning, handing you a New Testament, shaking your hand, and telling you to have a good day. No preaching, no yelling, no screaming. Not even any comments about God whatsoever. Just a look saying "here's the Good Book, I hope it can do something for you as it has for me." They do nothing that should make a person uncomfortable. I can really appreciate that approach. Each time I see them I am thankful for what they do even though I don't believe in it. They do things the right way and are friendly faces. I always accept their gift and shake their hands with a smile. When I was a student I had quite a collection of Gideon bibles because I just can't refuse them. I wish ALL "evangelism" was done this way. Nonbelievers would have a much easier time putting up with it, IMO.
