"Sittin in a downtown St. Pete Sports Bar yesterday"

I FINALLY realized and accepted 2 things that I had been fighting to accept since SOS's leaving 4 years ago: 1. We are no longer an "elite" program, nationally. I fought it and fought it these last 4 seasons, NEVER willing to accept it....but it's true. We are not. Not to say that we will not return to theat level in the near future (next 2 seasons) but don't kid yourself. We are "middle of the road" with the present talent and coaching schemes. 2. "I've lost that once great feeling of ANTICIPATION of something wonderful happening on the very next Gator offensive play." Think about what I am trying to say and see if you agree: Like you, from 1990 to 2001, even when things were going goofy for the offense and there were those times under Spurrier that we had our low points offensively in a game, you always had the feeling that on the very next play. whatever it was, you were going to be treated to something "special" and see the ball either into the endzone, or at the very least, a big gainer in some vertical fashion. I've lost that feeling and I hate it. I do not enjoy watching our offense this year. I have no clue who we are (Philosophy-wise) or where we are going, from play to play. I'm tired to death of watching us run sideways, hinge and zone (man) blocking at only Level 1, allowing mediocre opposing LB's and safeties to look like All-Americans, tackling our backs at or near the LOS, because no one, and I mean NO ONE (O-line or slot receivers), is asked to/made to block anyone past Level 1. I'm tired to death of watching 4-5 receivers run 8-10 yards down the field, (rather slowly I might add), stop, turn and stand....STAND I tell you! Poor Chris Leak, if you have noticed this season, has had to double-clutch his throwing motion, waiting for supposedly speedy receievers to get into/out of their cuts. Blame Chris for some things, including taking way too many sacks, but don't blame timing on him. Get on the Receiver's coach and those WR's running (semi-running) very poorly executed and designed routes. Our kicking game, especially punt coverage and KO coverage game has been a joke these last 2 weeks, if not the entire season. How many times have we kicked the ball out of bounds on our kick-coverage team this season? 5-6? 12 men on the field, after a USC time-out, to end the comeback chance? 11 penalties? 2nd and 1's turn into 3rd and 17 situations because of dumb pentalies? We have been thoroughly out-coached these last 2 ballgames (Vandy and USC) and that is not sitting well with me, nor should it with you. 12 Injuries? Part of the game, part of the equation every week at any level of football. Those of you that use it as an excuse, pardon me, but i don't want to hear it. Vandy should not have been a problem and they were. South Carolina? Don't tell me that their #1's are better than our #1 and #2's. The fact is that Vandy and USC's #1's were COACHED better than our 1's and 2's. Like Kerasotis said this morning: "(yesterday's game) was like watching an iPod going against an 8-track." We are now compared to an 8-track, and he's right. Like it or not, he is. Now, all that said, I do believe that Urban Meyer will get it done, just not this season. It's always said and quoted how the offense is struggling to find it's way and get comfortable....heck, the very same can be said about Urban trying to get comfortable and find his way in the SEC. Imo, he has a far harder job and learning-curve than his players do learning his new system. I like Urnan Meyer. He has my full support. Maybe I understand what he is going through more so than you do. been there, done that. took the heat and had to respond to it. He will also. I believe in him! I believe that he "can" take us back to that "elite" status, nationally and in the SEC. Will he? Don't know...but I'll go out on a limb and say that if we continue to run an offense similar to what i've seen the past 9 games, preicated on a "dink and dunk" passing game, no combo-routes, no mid-field crossing routes off the "island" (skinny post), and side-ways running with no blocking past Level 1, we'll continue to be a middle-of-the-road SEC football team and a mere Top 30 D-1 football program. He has to change and I think that he knows that. I have to beleive that his recruiting mindset has already changed since him coming here last january. He's had a full SEC season under his belt and let's face it, it's not going to take another for him to realize what can/what won't work in this league. He is already on record as saying that the ONE THING that he has been most impressed with and had no realization of before coming was the SPEED of defense in the SEC! He's correct....it's simply un-matched nationwide for any other conference. As always, guys, these are only my thoughts and you are welcome to agreee with all, some or none of them. I continue to respect EVERY view anyone has on the VS, particularly those that do not agree with me. Differing views are never bad, imo, when given respectfully. I may not agree with you or you, me, but at the very least, a differing view makes you/alows you to re-evaluate your own point of view on any given subject. That's a good thing. Go Gators!!!! Mims
