I truly believe many of us have forgotten the role of a head football coach. We have had our perception altered during the past 12 years by a man who did very little in a conventional manner. I know those of you calling for Zook's firing know this, but I feel it must be said anyway. The head coach's job is akin to that of a chief operating officer in a business. He has a staff and he asks that they perform at a high level. They report to him, and yes, he is ultimately responsible for the overall performance of the team. Three short weeks ago, this football team appeared to have exceeded expectations by going to Knoxville and defeating what was then believed to be a very formidable UT team. Two short weeks ago, the offense and defense were both clicking quite impressively and only a bizarre special teams meltdown prevented us from having another completely impressive, dominating performance. Just one week ago, our offense showed itself to be inept. Not time for panic, but certainly cause for concern. Was it just a flat week (the type we had become used to vs. SECW teams in years past), or a huge red flag? Too soon to tell. This past Saturday...the red flag became a RED FLAG. Now it's time to start judging Ron Zook. Now is the time to see how he handles full fledged adversity and back to back poor performances by players and his staff. Up till this point, he has been trusting those who work for him to do their jobs. Now we see what he is made of as a head coach. Do we expect him to turn it around to the point where we will win every game? Of course not. Do we expect to see changes that enable us to be competitive in every game and improve on a regular basis? Absolutely. But to call for the man's firing at this point is just knee-jerk, spoiled brat, unsupportive bullcrap in my opinion. Now we get to see what type of a head coach Ron Zook is.
