"Hollywood references to FSU"

Body Heat (1981) – in this movie William Hurt plays a seedy, incompetent attorney (redundant?) in Florida. He is seen wearing a FSU shirt in the movie, implying it is his alma mater. Kathleen Turner convinces him to try to kill her husband…using sex to entice him.

Couch Trip (1988) – Charles Grodin plays a pompous Beverly Hills radio psychologist (ala Fraiser) who has a nervous breakdown and decides to go to London to rest up without his fans knowing why he left (says he's taking a sabbatical to work on his next book). He tells his lawyer to hire a replacement for his radio show while he's gone, but to make sure the guy is a hack, so his fans will pine for his return. The lawyer has his assistant search for an incompetent psychiatrist from out of town. The assistant finds one in Chicago that he thinks is perfect. While the assistant is describing him, the lawyer asks if he is dumb enough. The assistant replies," He graduated from Florida State University with a C+ average. The guy's lucky to be working". The guy he is talking about has been shown earlier in the movie as a worthless, bumbling psychiatrist who could care less about his patients

Just Cause (1995) - Sean Connery interviews a small town "good ole boy" defense attorney in Florida played by Ned Beatty. He has Nole stuff all over his desk and walls. After remarking about Connery’s impressive position as a professor at Harvard Law School, he remarks, "I graduated from Florida State", clearly acknowledging lower class status in his education. Later in the conversation he refers to himself as,"A backwoods Florida State Law School Alumni…". During the interview Connery is critical of Ned’s efforts to defend a client – calling it "pathetic".

King of Queens (2000) – the wife applied to a bunch of colleges when she was younger and the only one that accepted her was FSU (implying lower academic acceptance standards). The husband hid her acceptance letter fearing her upset at only being accepted to attend FSU – and that she might waste her time actually going there to get a meaningless degree.

Sunshine State (2002) – one of the movie’s unsavory characters is a former FSU star running back who got a 15 year old girl pregnant while he was in college (at age 19). He was on his way to the big time (Heisman talk and future in the NFL) when he blew out his knee and had to give up football. Now, about a decade later, he uses his notoriety to sell cars at a local dealership, while he works on the side to convince people to sell their valuable beachfront property to a local group of small time investors he claims to manage – the investors are actually an unscrupulous national land development company that owns the car dealership where he works.

Will & Grace (2002) - Grace wanted to have Will as a backup sperm donor. Grace said, "It’s like a backup college you apply to just in case you don't get into the one you really want to go to." Will replies, "So my sperm is like your Florida State."

Tonight Show #1 (2003) – during his opening monologue, Jay Leno makes a joke referencing that a famous rapper (P. Diddy?) had just been charged with murder but the good news was that he had been offered a scholarship to play football at FSU.

Tonight Show #2 (2003) – during another opening monologue Leno says, "The bad news is that 13,000 seniors in Florida will not graduate because they failed a state achievement test. The good news is they can still play football for Florida State!!!"

West Wing (2003) - the Deputy Chief of Staff was having a lunch meeting and these two female political science students approach him and say they are from Florida State. They are portrayed as obvious idiots, asking in their best Valley girl type tone, if he had a 'thing' going with the political consultant with whom he was having lunch.

Simpson’s (2004) - Baby Maggie (the one always sucking on the pacifier) is being tested for pre-nursery school and does well on the test. The tester, voiced by American Idol's Simon Cowell (the arrogant English guy - is that redundant?), says "She's already smart enough to teach at Florida State". Homer yells, "Go Seminoles!" afterwards.

Father of the Pride (2004) - In this adult cartoon show with people and animals, the mother is trying to get the grandfather to spend time with his grandson. The grandfather begs off claiming, "Not tonight, I've got a sure thing lined up. This girl is easier to get into than Florida State!"

A good shot is always a lot of fun. Several years ago I was watching the "Tonight Show." Burt Reynolds was the guest. Don't remember if he was with Johnny or being the guest host. He got into conversation with some guy off camera in the audience. He even learned his name. Then he asked him, "What's the good word, Joe?" The guy replied loud and clear, "Giv'em Hell Gators." Needless to say Burt, became very "cloudy" and sullen.
