"Absolutely. There Was A Time In My Life When" |
|
I would have ranked Bobby Bowden as the best all around guy in College football. Bobby is an alum of my high school. His mother was a mentor to my mother. The Bowdens family and the BIGJOE family attended the same Baptist church in Birmingham. I was in the pre-school with Terry and Tommy on occasions. I say all this to say I came to the table as an admirer of Bobby Bowden. I was pissed that Auburn didn't try to hire him when Shug retired and then didn't try again when Barfield got fired and hired that Pat Dye guy (who had a winning record vs. Bowden, but I digress).
I now see him as a sleeze bag dottering old fool, who #badword# a goat if it would help him beat the point spread. The change in perception started about 1989. The fact that he raised his son to be a quitter has helped. I hope that he doesn't retire, I hope he goes out in style---that a FSU player makes a late hit on a cream puff QB in a blow out game, the QB is forced out of bounds and takes out Bobby's knees-- his head hits the ground and explodes like an over ripe watermelon. If he goes out like that I will take it all back and write my Congressman demanding that the State of Florida be renamed Bobby Bowden and the Capital City renamed Ole Watermelon Head. |
