I was sure I'd wake up and find out it was all a dream. I am indescribably happy for Billy and the Boys, and for that matter, for everyone associated with the greatest University on the face of the planet. I am so pleased that we have a team we can be so very proud of on every level. They are outstanding athletes, they are diligent students, and they are wonderful human beings. This team represents the University of Florida so incredibly well and they make me burst with pride. Winning a National Championship in BASKETBALL is about the best thing I could imagine. As much as I LOVE Gator football, I am a much more rabid fan of Gator basketball. It started under Norm Sloan for me, when my roommate worked in the basketball office and I got to know guys like Eugene McDowell. How could you NOT love any sport that guy played? When Lon Kruger took us to uncharted territory with the 1994 Final Four run, I couldn't imagine life could get any better. Getting to know kids like Craig Brown and Tiny Williams made that even more special. When Lon left us so suddenly, I was disillusioned and disappointed. THEN, we hire some hotshot New Yorker who had done pretty well with a team from, of all places, West Virginia??? Then I met Billy, and all my apprehension melted away. Yeah, he was younger than me (shudder!), but after talking to him for five minutes, I was confident he was the right guy to take the Gators to new heights. I have so enjoyed watching him grow into the amazing coach he is today. I have been fortunate to get to know this coaching staff and their families over the past decade, and I can say with confidence that you will never meet a finer group of people anywhere. As successful as they have been, they remain down to earth and friendly and kind and humble. They deserve all the accolades coming their way, and I hope it continues for a long, long time! OK, time to go welcome the team home! GO GATORS!!
