It's taken me a few days to completely digest the numbers and assess just how incredible Florida winning the NCAA Basketball Championship truly is. Chew on some of these, because personally I'm dumbfounded:
- To win the National Championship, UF had to beat the school who owns the most national titles (10) in NCAA basketball history
- UF did not lose to a non-conference opponent the entire season - including going 4-0 against the Big East, 3-0 vs. the ACC, and 1-0 vs. the Pac-10
- This Gator team was unranked in any poll at the beginning of the season
- This Gator team had lost three starters to the NBA, the team's three leading scorers who accounted for more than 60% of their '04-05' scoring
- UF started four sophomores (only two of which were regular starters in '04-'05), and one junior, and had one lone senior
- UF beat both Florida State and Miami in the same season, and averaged a nine point margin in those victories
- Florida averaged a 16 point margin of victory against their competition in the 2006 NCAA Tournament
- The Gators had a better than 3-to-1 team assist to turnover margin in the championship game against UCLA who previously ranked #1 in team defense during the tournament
- UF's starting point guard had but one turnover to eight assists against said UCLA defense
- Only one Gator player fouled out the entire six game NCAA Tournament
- The Gators became the first team in state of Florida history to win the national championship
- Joakim Noah, the Most Outstanding Player of the 2006 NCAA Tournament, played all of two minutes in two games during the 2005 tournament
- Two of UF's regular season SEC losses came to a team that was seeded #2 in the NCAA Tournament and won the SEC East division title
- Two other of UF's regular season SEC losses came to teams who also were awarded NCAA tournament bids
- The final two of UF's regular season SEC losses came to the team who won their second consecutive NIT title
- Florida avenged those two losses to South Carolina by winning the SEC Tournament title over the Gamecocks
- UF was 2-0 against another 2006 Final Four team (LSU, the SEC regular season champions) and averaged a 12.5 point margin of victory in those two wins over the Tigers
- Florida overcame serious regular season injuries to their starting shooting guard and small forward
- The Gators beat a #1 and #2 seed en route to their 2006 NCAA Tournament title
- The win over the #1 seed (Villanova) avenged the Gators' 2005 NCAA Tournament loss to the Wildcats
- UF beat two Final Four teams who knocked out other #1 seeds, including UCONN the consensus pre-tournament favorite
- Florida by themselves won the same amount of 2006 NCAA Tourament games as did all four of the ACC teams in the 2006 tournament combined
WOW!
