Is that it is currently the hardest to win a national championship for. This is not because you have to deal with 85 scholarship players. It's not because it takes a much larger budget and facilities. It's not even because the athletes are better. Far from it.
The reason it's the hardest to get is because you have to have the right schedule, the right level of respect from the media and the right wins/loses by teams not even connected to your program. Lack in any of those crucial components and you will be watching the national championship game from your couch. Ask Auburn, Utah or BYU about this. It's so politically derisive and frustrating.
If winning a basketball championship was so easy and should be so depreciated (well, according to people who love football), then why haven't many of the great football powers done it? You look at the athletic budget of many top football programs and the emphasis they place on sports. Yet with all their money, facilities, and great recruiting areas, they can't bring in the right mix of elements in order to be more competitive on a yearly level like some of the other 'lesser' programs. Are you telling me that Gonzaga's athletic director is smarter than Auburns? Tennessee, Florida State, Miami, It's because once you get to a certain level, it is VERY HARD to maintain. That should be respected more than it currently is by alot of football fans.
It's easy to pass on the basketball trophies when you're not winning them.
