"Spring Practice thoughts" |
|
The spring seemed to be mostly about finding some depth and getting younger guys a chance. As with the spring game, the proven starters didn't do much in the spring becuase they didn't have to. A number of guys helped themselves in trying to gain playing time while some may have hindered their chances and others still have something to prove. First the guys that really made a charge to get a bigger role on the team, by position QB: Well only Tebow had something to really prove. Improved pretty well over the course of only 15 practices. Started to develop a comfort level with the team quickly. It's great to see Mullen focusing most of his attention on getting Tebow ready. Tebow will definitely play a few series every game. Still Tebow has some work to do. He needs to get rid of the ball quicker, got sacked today a few times because of that, although the 2nd team line struggled some. Also must change this run first mentality and try to find plays downfield. Running is ok but if you can make a throw downfield after scrambling it's better than tucking it for a few yards. RB: Deshawn Wynn really started working hard at the end of practices and to me came away from the spring as #1 on the depth chart. While Moore, Manson and Walker each dealt with some injuries, Wynn played very well as the lone tailback. He had some nice runs in the spring game today. He still needs to become more consistent but when he plays to his potential, look no further than last year's LSU game where he had nearly 100 yards against a good D. I know Meyer wants one solid RB but in my opinion we just can't do that. Wynn and Manson are two diverse style and we need them both equally. After Manson's performance today he has to see the field alot. We could have a good thunder and lightning combo with these two. Meyer may get his wish though when Mon Williams arrives as he is a great combo of speed and power, very much like star back Ciatrick Fason. WR: Boateng and Murphy will play alot if the spring is any indication. They really proved they are ready to step in and provide depth. In Boateng's case he may even start as the replacement for Chad Jackson's spot. Knowing that some talented guys are on their way in the summer, they showed quite a bit of promise. And there is no way I can leave out CI. Ingram will be a star this year. Baker solidified that he is the best receiver we have. OL: Mo Hurt helped himself more than anyone. Most thought he'd be a redshirt this year but he got into great shape in the offseason workout program and played very well in practices. Hurt will provide immediate depth. I thought the first team O-line did a tremendous job in pass protection of Leak today. DL: Clint McMillain has been mentioned in every report and for good reason. Without McDonald and Harris for the entire spring, Clint jumped at his chance to play with the 1st team. He proved he belonged and also proved that he can't be kept off the field by pushing the line every time he was out there and really doing great against veterans like Steve Rissler. Derrick Harvey improved his stock as well. LB: He had a pick today of Leak to cap off his great spring, referring to Darryon Robinson. This walk-on outplayed guys like Ryan Stamper amongst the backups and could see himself in the 2 deep even when the big time freshmen like Spikes get here. DB: Tony Joiner got to start alot with Kyle Jackson out and took advantage of that. Reggie Lewis shut up all the haters that said he couldn't start at corner by playing better than Avery Atkins at times this spring. J-Twin also helped himself in the spring. Nick Brooks and John Curtis capped off nice springs with strong efforts today. Guys who hurt their chances: Kestahn Moore: I know he was injured but he lost some ground to Wynn and Manson who both played well today. David Nelson: Had a good spring game but for the most part in practices was invisible. With his size he should be a star but he's still not strong enough for his frame. He makes some plays every now and then but Murph and Nyan are much better. Add in that Harvin and Co. are on the way and he needs to work harder. Still he's got time, only a redshirt freshmen this year. Ryan Stamper: He had a chance to get a role in the 2 deep this spring with Jon Demps sitting out. He didn't really prove much though. He is a good player in coverage but he seems a little small on muscle which hurts against the run. Kyle Jackson: Again an injury victim but Tony Joiner outplayed him even when he was in. Carlton Medder: Possibly the most clueless OL we have. I don't want to knock the kid but he seems too out of shape and he was often out of place and off on his blocking assignments. He had a couple penalties for false starts and such in the spring game, not a good sign. Guys with a lot left to prove: Chevon Walker: Got dinged up a bit in a tackling drill that he was actually doing well in. Even before that though he saw almost no carries in scrimmage drills. He's a bit light and goes down easily. He's got some nice moves though and could be good in the open field. I say he's a red shirt candidate and really needs to work hard because Mon Williams could come in here and bury him on the charts. Carl Johnson: Get in better shape and I think he's fine. He's got all summer to study and learn the playbook but if he's out of shape it won't matter how much of his blocking assignments he know. Brian Crum: He's lucky Jon Demps wasn't participating much in the spring. Otherwise his job would probably belong to Demps. Last year Demps started out seeing more playing time than Crum and that could easily be the case this year. Crum did an ok job this spring taking over for the departed Todd McCullough but not well enough to win that job even with no competition. Demps back in the fall and Spikes/Doe and those guys on the way, he needs to work hard. Tartt/Codrington: They shared one of the starting guard spots on the team. Tartt was the man until his shoulder required surgery(which he just had, 10 weeks recovery time). Cod took over and struggled. I put Tartt here because he still needs to prove he can stay healthy and consistently perform. When he is healthy though he's a great player, otherwise he wouldn't have been starting games last year. Cod struggled a bit in his new position. If they aren't careful, Mo Hurt could stake a claim for that job. |
