"The Game"

This was emormously painful. Moreso than any of the Spurrier whippings, and though only the passage of time will tell, I don't think its just because of the immediacy of the moment. I'm not really sure what happened. After watching the Irish get knocked off by BC, I confess I got into a bit of a celebratory mood. But from my bleary and disbelieving eyes, these appeared to be the deciding factors. 1.I think the Georgia defense played the best game it has played all year. Despite the fact that UF kept moving the ball all night long, they kept them off the scoreboard and create a shopping cart full of turnovers. The 4th down stop at mid-field was typical. But as good as they were, they were only the second best defense on the field last night. All night long, and it only intensified as the game wore on,Georgia QB's were running for their lives even before the recievers could get off the line of scrimmage, even out of the shotgun. The UF D had fewer dramatic stops than the Georgia D, because most of their stops were of the pedestrian 3 and out variety. 2. And that really was the difference in the game. As the game wore on, Georgia 3 and outs came with greater frequency. I don't think Georgia converted a 3rd down all night. Meanwhile , on virtually every possession, UF would at least get a couple of first downs. By the 4th qurter, Georgia was spent and Florida had a full tank of gas. With every Georgia scoring opportunity in the 3rd that went down the drain, the inadequacy of the 13 points became more apparent. 3. I'm sure some Georgia fans may come over here and grouse that "we gave the game away". They will point to Billy Bennett's 2 missed field goals. They will point to Terrence Edwards monumental drop in the 4th quarter. But these are the sorts of things that happen to a team when its under such intense and unrelenting pressure; when over the course of a game its frustrations mount and its opportunities pass by withou reward. Where did the pressure come from? Florida, of course, and thats why Florida won the game, as opposed to any suggestion that Georgia beat themselves.Florida's defense smothered the Georgia offense all night long. When you're being smothered, on those infrequent occasions when you do come up for air (such as, Oh my God, I'm Terrence Edwards and I'm wide open 30 yards downfield for the first and perhaps the only time all night)you tend to gasp spasmodically. Its the sort of thing that can make one of the best receivers in the SEC look like a skinny linebacker trying to bat down a pass. 4. As I've said before Ron Zook is a fine man, and I think last night he took a major step towards proving he's a fine head coach as well. you always like to see good people succeed, and while I won't pretend for a moment that I enjoyed the fact that his proving came at our expense, one can't help but be happy for him. I really wish his dad had lived to see this. 5.I enjoyed, as I always do when I go, meeting and mixing with the UF crowd. Parked next to us crammed into this tiny little spot was an elderly getleman who said he'd been a UF season ticket holder for 35 years. From the looks of him, he did not become a season ticket holder at an early age. It was great to hear him tell stories before the game, and he had a smile a mile wide when we got back to the car afterwards. 6.All the credit and congratulations to the Gators. It was a great win, And I tihnk a harbinger for the personality Zook teams will exhibit in the years to come. Enjoy the win. And best of luck for the remainder of the season.
